How to Care for Your Skin in Winter.

With weather getting colder, more time spent indoors and masks and scarves being worn frequently, winter can be really tough on your skin. But with a few quick tips we can help you to look after your skin this winter from the inside out!

Hydration

Fluid intake plays a key role in keeping your skin hydrated and preventing dry, flaky winter skin outbreaks. While you might find it easy to drink water all day long in the summer, with winter weather generally colder and wetter it can seem like a less appealing prospect. Why not try to boost your hydration using (non-caffeinated) hot drinks? Herbal teas; warm ginger, lemon and honey; and a personal childhood favourite of mine - warm blackcurrant squash!

Eat enough fat

Fat is essential in our diets for general health, immunity and skin health. Fat in foods contains the fat soluble vitamins A, D E and K, which all contribute towards healthy looking, glowing skin. Try to include a fat source in every meal and get a range of different fat containing foods. Things like oily fish (salmon, trout), avocado, oils, butter, coconut oil, nuts and seeds are all great. Why not switch up to a higher fat dairy - go for blue milk rather than green, or try a 5% fat yoghurt rather than 0%. See what a difference it can make.

Consider supplementation

While it would be ideal to get everything your body needs from food and drink, that is often not possible. If you don’t eat certain foods, have gut issues, or are eating in a calorie deficit to lose weight, you might find your diet lacking in certain micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) that are key for glowing skin.

In particular, if you’re suffering from dry winter skin the Advanced Nutrition Programme Moisture Lock supplement and Skin Omegas can really help. The omegas are particularly beneficial if you struggle to eat oily fish (such as salmon and trout) more than once a week.

Find a consistent skincare routine that works for YOU

Not nutrition focused but really important when it comes to your skin. During the day and when you’re sleeping, your skin will secrete oils and sweat, and will pick up dirt which can lead to clogged pores and an inability to regulate your skins natural moisture.

A skincare routine doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive, just something that you can stick to and that becomes part of your daily routine. Find a cleanser that works for you and a good moisturiser that suits your skin and use them daily. Consistency is key when it comes to nutrition and consistency is key when it comes to skincare.
